Dear Students, Parents, & Public Education Supporters,
I am starting to believe that the warmth of summer is just around the corner now that crazy spring weather is here. Please drive carefully around schools and keep your eyes peeled for children during the morning and afternoon rushes!!
Early spring has been busy for me. I am still learning the names of all of the School Council chairs, principals and vice-principals, and staff at the board. I will continue to visit schools and SC meetings to meet the co-chairs and engage with parents. The opportunity to meet all of our awesome teachers, principals, VPs and students is refreshing and inspiring. It keeps me focused on the job of ensuring that the TDSB mission statement is more than words but is reflected in all that we do.
I want to remind everyone that our local School Superintendent is Linda Curtis. She can be contacted by email or by phone. In the case that you need to contact another Trustee or Superintendent, I am also providing links for all of the Trustees and Superintendents for each ward in the TDSB. As well, "WHAT TO DO" is link that outlines the steps you need to take to address your concerns or ask a question about TDSB policies and procedures, school boundaries, programs and services, Special Education, your child's school, teacher or any other issue. I've provided that link in this e-newsletter and on my website.
I`m also attaching a 2013-14 Progress Report for ER17 schools (East Region 17) or Ward 12 schools in Willowdale. If you have any questions about it you can contact Linda Curtis.
This update has information about board meetings, board initiatives and reports, upcoming community/parent consultations, school events and recognition, community events, an introduction to the student SuperCouncil, and other opportunities for you to get involved, get connected and for all of us to work together to keep our communities and public education great!
The most recent board meeting agendas and minutes are attached here. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like clarification about any of the decisions made at the March and April meetings. You can find a list of upcoming meetings at the end of this e-newsletter.

School Clean-up Day
April 17 2015
On Friday, April 17th at 2 pm, students from across Toronto are encouraged to help clean up our city's green spaces by picking up litter in their school yard or neighbourhood park. Schools may also choose to hold their clean-up event during EARTH WEEK, April 20th-24th. To increase participation, each Family of Schools (FOS) have been challenged to get as many school sites registered and participating as possible.
As of April 9th, 39% of Willowdale schools had registered to participate. Overall, 45% of our schools registered to participate. Good job Willowdale!
The first four Superintendents to get ALL of their school sites registered will receive either a water bottle refilling station, bike racks or large trees for ONE of the schools in their Family.
Superintendents will continue encouraging their schools to register until the deadline on April 17th. TDSB Communications will follow our schools on twitter on April 17th, and during Earth Week, and will highlight the various clean-up events taking place throughout the Board. Trustees are encouraged to join their schools and get involved in a clean-up event.

TDSB Governance Review – Public Consultations (The Hall Panel)
Have YOUR say with the Ministry of Education!
The Ministry of Education announced plans for their community consultations for the TDSB governance review. Public sessions will be held across the city of Toronto throughout April and May. Individuals can also comment electronically by completing an online questionnaire.
All submissions are to be received by May 30, 2015. I encourage all parents, students and supporters of public education to add your two cents and make sure that the provincial government understands YOUR concerns for your child's education, the condition of your school and the need for everyone to work together and be heard in order to maintain and improve public education in Ontario.
A local community consultation in North York will be held at the Central Library (Mel Lastman Square) on MAY 20th at 7pm

EARLY YEARS TWEETCHATS WITH JIM GRIEVE - MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
Jim Grieve, Assistant Deputy Minister in the Early Years Division of the Ministry of Education, hosts an interactive forum, about practices in the early years, on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 7 to 8 pm. The next tweetchat is scheduled to take place on April 22nd, 2015. The topic of the Tweetchat is usually announced on the Monday prior to the event and changes bi-weekly.
An easy way to participate in a tweet chat is to use www.tweetchat.com. The advantages are that it fills in the hashtag of the tweet chat automatically and filters out all extraneous tweets. We’ve found it works best on a device like iPad. There may be a slight delay of two or three seconds, so you may need to refresh regularly. Go to www.tweetchat.com and enter #leadershipshine in the box to enter the “chat room.”
You can also use HootSuite or TweetDeck and create a new column with the hashtag #leadershipshine. This will also work well, but remember to add the hashtag #leadershipshine to each tweet, or it will not show up in the tweet chat.
Should additional information be required, please contact Colleen Russell-Rawlins, Early Years Learning & Care at Colleen.Russell-Rawlins@tdsb.on.ca
This is an interesting communication idea that I am thinking about initiating for Ward 12. It might also be something that could work well at the TDSB with staff and Trustees available on a rotating schedule every two weeks or so. Let me know what you think - give it a try with Jim Grieve first.
